The U.S. Congress confirmed on Monday the victory of President-elect Donald Trump in the presidential election, making him the 47th President of the United States after members counted and certified the Electoral College votes.
Vice President Kamala Harris, who faced Trump in the November 2024 elections, announced, “Donald J. Trump from the state of Florida received 312 votes. Kamala D. Harris from the state of California received 226 votes.”
Harris affirmed that this is “sufficient declaration” of Trump and his Vice President J.D. Vance’s eligibility to take the oath of office on January 20.
This year’s certification process is overshadowed by the memory of the storming of the legislative building by Trump supporters, while Washington was also hit by a major snowstorm on Monday. However, none of these events disrupted efforts to hold the proceedings on time as required by the Constitution.
Following the certification, a two-week countdown begins leading to Trump’s inauguration on January 20, marking the start of his second presidential term in a ceremony to be held on the Capitol steps, where the January 6, 2021 riots took place
