Transnational Threads of Indian Nationalism: PM Modi’s Diplomatic Stance in Qatar, Canada, and Iran

5 minutes read

In a recent Podcast at NHS Media Dr Qamar Cheema Spoke about Indian Nationalism and the recent detainment of eight Navy Veterans by the Qatar Government.

Key Points

  •  India’s response to the detention of Indian Navy veterans in Qatar reveals a complex balancing act—juggling economic ties, diplomatic relations, and energy trade dynamics while navigating its national interests amidst global geopolitical complexities.
  • India’s strategic silence on the matter appears strategically aligned with seeking American assistance in navigating the sensitive situation, recognizing the significance of the Indian workforce in Qatar and the imperative of safeguarding economic interests in the region.

Dr Qamar Cheema said that the evolving geopolitical landscape in recent times has brought into focus the plight of eight Indian Navy veterans sentenced to death in Qatar. Dr Qamar has underscored the significance of this event, shedding light on India’s concerned status in the global arena. Qatar, a small yet influential country in West Asia, has sentenced these veterans allegedly involved in funding terrorists, prompting questions about the Indian government’s silence on the matter.

Dr Cheema stressed that this silence raises pertinent comparisons, notably juxtaposing the vocal stance taken when Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s remarks were at the centre of attention. The apparent disparity in India’s response to these two issues calls for a deeper exploration. The reticence of Indian civil societies and media further deepens the mystery. It’s imperative to investigate the reasons behind this silence, examining the intricate dimensions of Indian nationalism as a possible factor.

Central to this examination is the selective condemnation of certain entities. India’s outspoken stance against Hamas while maintaining silence regarding Iran’s actions raises eyebrows. The characterization of Hamas as a terrorist group and Iran as a non-terrorist country aligns with India’s strategic interests and diplomatic relationships. This juxtaposition reflects the complex web of Indian nationalism currently prevailing under Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

While comparing it with Pakistan he revealed stark differences. He said that India’s unity in its stance across various sectors—government, media, and civil societies—stands in contrast to the polarization evident in Pakistan. Foreign Minister Jay Shankar’s recent tweet reiterating support for the detained Indian navy personnel emphasizes the Indian government’s concerted efforts to secure their release.

Dr Cheema expressed that it is important to understand why the Indian Navy is recurrently embroiled in such controversies.

He said that the perceived veracity of these allegations against the Indian Navy veterans forms the crux of the matter. Qatar’s willingness to detain and sentence individuals, especially from a country like India, underscores the seriousness of the accusations. Qatar’s geopolitical influence, primarily attributed to its substantial wealth, exemplified by the highest per capita GDP globally, and its strategic importance in global diplomacy, cannot be underestimated.

Dr Cheema stressed that Qatar’s significance is further accentuated by its role in the international arena, notably through Al Jazeera’s global media influence and its harboring of Hamas’s leadership. Its relations with various global powers, including the United States, underscore its role as a significant player in regional politics. However, Qatar’s disputes with neighboring Saudi Arabia and the UAE over alleged destabilization efforts remain unresolved.

Dr Cheema emphasized that India, in navigating these diplomatic waters, needs to consider several factors. The necessity of a nuanced foreign policy approach that ensures energy, trade, strategic alliances, and the Chabahar port’s significance in West Asia must be balanced. India’s reliance on Iran for various strategic reasons underscores its cautious approach towards condemning Iran despite its stance against Hamas.

Furthermore, the intricate web of energy trade dynamics and the $15 billion energy import deal with Qatar emphasizes India’s cautious approach. The competitive energy trade landscape, especially after the Russia-Ukraine conflict, necessitates prudence in managing global alliances.

In this scenario, India’s prioritization of its national interests becomes evident. Leveraging its relations with the United States, especially in the context of the Indian workforce in Qatar, and strategic economic interests in the region, becomes imperative to address the issue. The 0.8 million Indian workforce in Qatar and the substantial remittances they generate emphasize India’s stakes in this situation. It underscores the need for India to balance its approach, leaning on American assistance while maintaining a diplomatic silence in the face of this critical issue.

In summary, India’s strategic silence and nuanced approach in the context of the Qatar-Indian Navy veterans’ situation reflect the complexity of global diplomacy, energy dynamics, and the imperative of safeguarding national interests. India’s alignment with American support underlines the depth of its considerations in a region of critical importance.
