Tehran Summons Italian Ambassador Over Iranian Citizen’s Detention

1 minutes read

The Iranian Foreign Ministry has summoned the Italian Ambassador to Tehran, Paola Amadei, to protest the continued detention of Iranian citizen Mohammad Abedini in Italy. The summons was made by Majid Nili, the Director General of Western Europe at the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Abedini, a co-founder of an Iranian company, was detained alongside Mehdi Sadeghi, an employee of a U.S. semiconductor manufacturing company, on accusations of violating U.S. export laws. Both men are alleged to have been involved in exporting equipment to Iran that the U.S. claims was used in a January 28, 2024, drone attack in Jordan, which killed three American soldiers and injured 47 others.

According to Iranian officials, the arrest of Abedini in Milan at the request of the U.S. is illegal and serves Washington’s political goals to hold Iranian citizens hostage. Nili emphasized that this action undermines Tehran-Rome relations and violates international law, including human rights standards.

“This detention not only damages the longstanding ties between Iran and Italy but also breaches principles of international law,” Nili said. He urged Italy to resist what he described as the U.S.’s “hostage-taking policy” and facilitate Abedini’s immediate release to prevent further harm to bilateral relations.

Abedini, who holds residency in both Switzerland and Iran, was detained in Italy under what Iranian authorities call baseless allegations. Meanwhile, Sadeghi, an Iranian-American, resides in Massachusetts and faces similar accusations in the U.S.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry’s statement called on Italy to prioritize adherence to international legal norms and human rights standards over U.S. political pressures. Iran continues to push for Abedini’s release, highlighting concerns about what it describes as an unjust and arbitrary detention.
