Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), is on a three-day visit to India from December 11 to 13. His visit, aimed at enhancing the multifaceted Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two nations, includes participation in the 4th India-UAE Strategic Dialogue and the 15th Joint Commission Meeting (JCM).
The visit underscores the growing importance of the India-UAE partnership across strategic, economic, and cultural dimensions. Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal warmly welcomed Sheikh Abdullah, emphasizing that the visit would further solidify the strong ties between the two nations.
Focus on Strategic Dialogue and Economic Partnership
The India-UAE Strategic Dialogue, co-chaired by Sheikh Abdullah and India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, provides an opportunity for both sides to review and strengthen various aspects of their relationship. The UAE has emerged as India’s third-largest trading partner and second-largest export destination in FY24, with trade figures reflecting robust economic engagement: $35.62 billion in exports and $48 billion in imports. Additionally, the UAE is India’s seventh-largest overseas investor, with total foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows amounting to $18.5 billion between April 2000 and March 2024.
Both nations have worked towards enhancing bilateral trade and investments through the implementation of the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) in May 2022. This agreement has been a cornerstone in achieving the goal of $100 billion in bilateral trade over the next five years. To further facilitate economic integration, discussions are underway to link payment platforms, such as India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI), with UAE systems.
Strengthening Cultural and Environmental Cooperation
In addition to economic and strategic ties, cultural and environmental collaborations have been a priority for both countries. During the 14th JCM in Abu Dhabi in September 2022, India and the UAE signed an MoU to establish a Cultural Council Forum aimed at fostering deeper cultural exchanges. Another notable agreement was signed between the Wildlife Institute of India and the International Fund for Houbara Conservation to conserve the Great Indian Bustard and the Lesser Florican, underscoring a shared commitment to biodiversity.
Recognition of Community Contributions
The UAE Foreign Minister acknowledged the significant contributions of the Indian community to the UAE’s development and progress. This gesture was reciprocated by S. Jaishankar, who expressed gratitude to the UAE leadership for their continued support and care for Indian expatriates in the country.
Future Roadmap
Both sides agreed to hold institutional dialogues on key issues such as consular matters, skills, and manpower in the coming months. These dialogues aim to address mutual interests, including workforce development and mobility, which are integral to the partnership.
A Multifaceted Partnership
Sheikh Abdullah’s visit highlights the enduring strength of the India-UAE relationship, which has evolved into a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership over the years. From cultural collaborations to ambitious trade targets, the ties between the two countries are marked by mutual respect, shared goals, and a commitment to deepening cooperation across all sectors. The ongoing visit is expected to pave the way for new initiatives and further solidify one of India’s most dynamic bilateral partnerships.
