Saudi Arabia Reestablishes Diplomatic Presence in Kabul After 3-Year Hiatus

1 minutes read

In a significant development, Saudi Arabia on Sunday announced the resumption of activities at its embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan, marking an end to a diplomatic hiatus that began with the Taliban’s takeover in August 2021. The decision to reopen the embassy comes more than three years after Saudi diplomats were withdrawn due to the “unstable situation” following the Taliban’s rise to power.

The embassy’s reactivation aims to provide comprehensive services to the Afghan people, reflecting Saudi Arabia’s commitment to fostering stronger bilateral relations. The move has been welcomed by the Afghan Foreign Ministry, which expressed optimism about enhancing cooperation between the two nations.

This diplomatic step follows Saudi Arabia’s earlier resumption of consular services in November 2021, amid continued humanitarian aid efforts through the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center. Although the Taliban government remains unrecognized by most countries, this embassy reopening signifies a potential shift in international engagement with Afghanistan’s current administration
