Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO)

A senior Russian lawmaker has pushed for Iran’s inclusion in the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), a Eurasian security alliance. Andrei Kartapolov, head of the Russian Duma Defense Committee, highlighted the participation of an Iranian delegation in CSTO’s Parliamentary Assembly, suggesting a closer look at Iran’s potential membership.

He questioned the exclusion of Iran, stating, “Why shouldn’t Iran be a member? The Collective Security Treaty Organization is not a private club.” The CSTO, which includes Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, and Tajikistan, focuses on military-political cooperation and mutual defense support.

Since its formal establishment as an international regional organization in 2003, with headquarters in Moscow, the CSTO has aimed to enhance security among its members. According to its charter, any country sharing its goals and principles can apply for membership, paving the way for discussions on Iran’s possible integration into the bloc. This call from Kartapolov might signal a shift in regional security dynamics.
