Regional Cooperation in Maritime Security: India, Japan, and South Korea vs. the Absence of Pakistan

3 minutes read

In a recent conversation at the NHS Media, Dr. Qamar Cheema spoke about the shifting dynamics of Pakistan’s political relevance on the global stage. He highlighted how Pakistan’s leadership is facing increasing neglect in the West while observing that India, Japan, and South Korea are actively seeking to safeguard their shipping routes and navigate the complexities of the ever-changing geopolitical landscape.

Key Points:

  • The neglect of political leadership in global geopolitics can sow the seeds of internal conflict.
  • Pakistan must break free from regional constraints, venture beyond borders, and actively pursue global relevance to safeguard their interests in an ever-changing world.
  • India’s proactive engagement is solidifying its influence on the world stage.

Dr. Cheema noted the profound impact of the Arab-Israel conflict on Asian economies, particularly those heavily reliant on energy imports. The recent war exacerbated concerns due to the vital role of Middle Eastern oil in sustaining these nations. In the past, approximately 76% of the world’s crude oil passed through the Strait of Hormuz, making the region’s stability critical. After the war in Ukraine, countries such as India, Ukraine, South Korea, and Japan found themselves increasingly dependent on Middle Eastern oil, further complicating global energy security.

Dr. Cheema also emphasized the contrasting approaches taken by world powers toward Pakistan. He pointed out that during a recent meeting of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) Forum, both the Chinese and Japanese Prime Ministers engaged with Pakistan’s caretaker Prime Minister. However, the political leadership of Pakistan was seemingly overlooked by Western powers, which often prioritize security over political engagement. This neglect, according to Dr. Cheema, has the potential to trigger internal conflicts between Pakistan’s military and political leadership, as witnessed during Prime Minister Imran Khan’s tenure.

In contrast, Dr. Cheema underscored the increasing relevance of India in global geopolitics. India’s proactive engagement in the Indo-Pacific and with various Muslim countries has allowed it to establish a more influential position. He cited India’s efforts to build energy linkages in the Middle East as a means to undermine Pakistan’s position and assert its power and relevance. Dr. Cheema contended that, in an interconnected world, nations must venture beyond their borders to protect their interests, as demonstrated by Japan’s self-defense forces operating in Djibouti and its Military Information Gathering Mission established to safeguard military vessels.

Dr. Cheema argued that Pakistan needs to shift its mindset from being left behind and ignored to actively seeking global relevance. He stressed that Pakistan should explore the Indo-Pacific and establish connections with emerging economies, emphasizing that being confined to regional constraints could lead to stagnation and hinder progress.

He pointed out that India is swiftly advancing in Asian geopolitics by recognizing the challenges posed by China. India, Japan, and South Korea have engaged in maritime and naval exercises to protect their interests and expand their influence in the region. Dr. Cheema urged Pakistan to break free from its regional comfort zone, activate its Navy, and extend its reach to international borders. He emphasized that understanding global trends is crucial for Pakistani politicians to bolster their country’s relevance both internally and externally.

Dr. Cheema stressed that evolving landscape of global geopolitics and the contrasting approaches taken by various nations, particularly Pakistan and India. As the world continues to change rapidly, his analysis serves as a valuable reminder that Pakistan must adapt, engage in global affairs, and protect its interests to remain relevant in a dynamic international arena. It is clear that a proactive approach is vital for maintaining Pakistan’s position and influence in an ever-evolving world.
