On the second leg of his tri-nation visit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi actively participated in the G20 Summit held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. On the sidelines, he engaged in numerous bilateral meetings with global leaders, furthering India’s strategic, economic, and diplomatic goals. These interactions reflected India’s growing influence in addressing shared global challenges and fostering international partnerships.

PM Modi discussed advancing the India-France Strategic Partnership under the Horizon 2047 roadmap in his third meeting this year with French President Emmanuel Macron. Topics included defence, space, civil nuclear energy, and Artificial Intelligence (AI). Modi complimented Macron on hosting the successful Paris Olympics and Paralympics. Both leaders emphasised enhancing people-to-people connections and pledged to work together for stability in the Indo-Pacific region. PM Modi also welcomed France’s upcoming AI Action Summit, highlighting collaborative efforts in digital public infrastructure.

Prime Minister Modi met UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, marking their first bilateral interaction since Starmer assumed office. Discussions centred on the India-UK Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, focusing on technology, green energy, and trade. The two leaders underscored the need to accelerate Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations. PM Modi announced the establishment of Indian consulates in Belfast and Manchester to facilitate deepening ties, which Starmer warmly received.

PM Modi’s meeting with Norway’s Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store highlighted renewable energy, green hydrogen, and sustainable maritime initiatives. The leaders also discussed the India-European Free Trade Association Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement (India-EFTA-TEPA). Recognizing Norway’s expertise in the blue economy and India’s renewable energy ambitions, they explored joint opportunities in geothermal energy, fisheries, and Arctic research, emphasizing environmental sustainability.

In his first meeting with Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro, PM Modi emphasized strengthening trade, investment, defence, and digital technology collaborations. The leaders discussed preparations for the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties in 2025 and committed to marking the milestone with joint initiatives. Renewable energy, particularly green hydrogen, emerged as a key focus area for cooperation.

Prime Minister Modi’s interaction with Indonesia’s President Prabowo Subianto celebrated the 75th anniversary of diplomatic ties. Discussions highlighted trade, defence, connectivity, and tourism under their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. Both leaders emphasized prioritizing the concerns of the Global South and enhancing cooperation in multilateral forums such as ASEAN.

PM Modi’s meeting with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni explored defence, trade, and technology collaboration. Modi underscored the importance of advancing education, green energy, and cultural exchanges to strengthen India-Italy relations. The dialogue reflected shared aspirations for a sustainable and technologically advanced future.

During discussions with Spanish President Pedro Sánchez, PM Modi focused on economic collaboration and strengthening bilateral ties. Modi’s remarks emphasized exploring new opportunities for mutual growth, reinforcing India-Spain relations in trade and innovation.

PM Modi met United States President Joe Biden at the Summit, describing their interaction as delightful. Discussions reaffirmed the strong partnership between the two nations. Modi also met UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to discuss global challenges and Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong to further bilateral cooperation.

At the G20’s inaugural session on “Fighting Hunger and Poverty,” PM Modi highlighted India’s success in lifting 250 million people out of poverty, presenting it as a model for sustainable development. He expressed gratitude to Brazilian President Lula da Silva for hosting the Summit, reiterating India’s commitment to the G20 Troika and shared global progress.

Prime Minister Modi’s proactive engagements at the G20 Summit underscored India’s vision of collaborative internationalism. His bilateral discussions spanned critical sectors such as technology, green energy, defence, and economic innovation, cementing India’s role as a key global player. Through partnerships with nations like France, the UK, Norway, and Indonesia, Modi showcased India’s commitment to addressing shared challenges and building a resilient global future.
