Pakistan Assumes UN Security Council Seat for 2025-2026 Term

1 minutes read

Pakistan has officially commenced its two-year term as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the years 2025-2026. The nation was elected in June with an overwhelming majority, securing 182 votes out of a possible 185 in the General Assembly, reflecting the international community’s strong confidence in Pakistan’s role on the global stage.

This marks a significant moment for Pakistan, providing it with a platform to contribute to international peace and security. During its tenure, Pakistan aims to focus on issues such as counter-terrorism, peacekeeping, and the right to self-determination, particularly in regions facing long-standing conflicts. The country’s Foreign Minister expressed optimism about working collaboratively with other council members to address these key issues.

The UNSC, composed of 15 members with five permanent and ten non-permanent seats, is tasked with maintaining peace and security among nations.  Pakistan’s active participation is anticipated to bring a nuanced perspective to the table, especially from the viewpoint of developing nations.
