In a significant diplomatic engagement, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and newly-elected Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake held bilateral talks at Hyderabad House, marking Dissanayake’s first international visit since assuming office. The leaders discussed a wide range of issues aimed at bolstering the strategic partnership between the two nations.

During the joint press statement, PM Modi welcomed President Dissanayake, emphasizing the historic ties and the new energy infused into the relationship with this visit. Key highlights included plans for enhanced economic cooperation, focusing on investment-led growth and connectivity. New initiatives like electricity grid connectivity and a multi-product petroleum pipeline were announced to strengthen energy ties. Additionally, both countries agreed on the importance of humanitarian approaches in addressing the fishermen’s livelihood issue.

President Dissanayake assured that Sri Lanka would not allow its territory to be used in any manner detrimental to India’s interests, reinforcing trust and cooperation. The leaders also touched upon the Tamil community’s aspirations in Sri Lanka, with Modi expressing hope for reconciliation and constitutional implementation.

This meeting underscored the commitment to deeper collaboration in defense, trade, and cultural exchanges, setting a positive tone for future interactions.
