Iran’s Foreign Ministry summoned the Saudi ambassador to Tehran on January 1, 2025, to protest the execution of six Iranian nationals accused of drug trafficking in Saudi Arabia.
The Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed strong outrage, highlighting that the executions were carried out without prior consular notification, which they claim breaches international law.
The six Iranians were reportedly executed in Dammam for smuggling hashish into the kingdom. Following this incident, Iran announced it would dispatch a legal and consular team to Riyadh to address the matter further. This diplomatic tension comes amidst a backdrop of historically strained relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia, despite recent attempts at normalization. The execution has reignited concerns over human rights practices and diplomatic protocol between the two nations.
