Indonesia Joins BRICS, Boosting Global South Influence

1 minutes read

Indonesia has officially become a full member of the BRICS alliance, a significant move that expands the group’s influence in global economic and political landscapes.

Announced by Brazil, which currently holds the BRICS presidency, Indonesia’s inclusion marks it as the first Southeast Asian nation in the bloc, joining Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, and the recently added members like Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates.

This membership aligns with Indonesia’s “free and active” foreign policy, aiming to amplify the voice of developing nations in international forums. The addition of Indonesia, the world’s fourth most populous country, is poised to bolster BRICS’ push for reforms in global governance, particularly in advocating for the interests of the Global South. With President Prabowo Subianto’s administration emphasizing food and energy security, Indonesia’s participation is expected to focus on these areas, enhancing cooperation within the bloc.

The expansion of BRICS to include Indonesia is seen as a step towards a more multipolar world, where emerging economies have a stronger say in global affairs.
