India’s Journey Towards a New World Order

3 minutes read

Dr. Qamar Cheema’s recent podcast spoke about the evolving global order and India’s role within it. He highlighted the significance of the recent statement given by Dr Jaishankar and India’s role is shifting on the world stage.

Key Points:

  • India is embracing the rise of the Global South, challenging the dominance of powerful countries in shaping the world order.
  • India took centre stage at the G20 summit, showing its commitment to representing the interests of countries from the Global South.
  • India is working to correct past imbalances, giving a fair voice to countries that were often overlooked, through events like the Global South Summit.
  • While India is gaining influence by joining important global discussions it also promotes a fair world where countries collaborate closely to solve problems.

Dr. Cheema mentioned that Dr. Jaishankar recently spoke about the emergence of the Global South in what he referred to as “World 2.0.” This refers to the evolution of the world order since 1945, marked by decolonization and the rise of the Global South. India is advocating for a shift away from the dominance of the global North, believing that it’s time for the Global South to play a more significant role. India aims to challenge Western leadership and be a proactive partner in global affairs.

According to Dr. Cheema, India’s presidency of the G20 marked a milestone for the Global South, indicating its growing importance. India emphasizes that past mistreatment of the Global South must be rectified, as demonstrated by the Global South Summit in January 2023. India has listened to challenges from 125 countries and incorporated their concerns into the G20 agenda. However, Pakistan seems preoccupied with domestic issues and is less engaged in these global discussions.

India’s approach contrasts with Pakistan’s; India seeks to empower the Global South while Pakistan seems focused on financial gains. Dr. Cheema also touched on the North-South theory, highlighting the disparities between developed, stable Northern countries and less developed Southern countries. India’s goal is to bolster the confidence of the Global South and promote a diversified, democratic form of globalization. India wants production to centre in the South rather than just consumption.

He noted that Pakistan appears to be focused on financial gains without strategic consideration, while India is being taken more seriously globally due to its engagement with significant world blocs. India aims to address global challenges by advocating for a participative and equitable global order, driven by strategic autonomy and international cooperation.

Dr. Cheema highlighted India’s various sector developments, including engagement with the Global South. India’s approach differs from China’s, which lacks strong ties with Global South countries. Dr. Cheema emphasized that India’s engagement with the global blocs is increasing its influence and that Pakistan should identify its weaknesses and turn them into strengths.
