2 minutes read

The Indian Army celebrates its 77th Army Day on January 15, 2025, amidst a transformative decade from 2023 to 2032. The declaration of 2023 as the “Year of Technology Absorption” and 2025 as the “Year of Reforms” marks a strategic shift toward modernization and self-reliance. This initiative aims to address diverse operational challenges through indigenous solutions, emphasizing technological innovation in areas like artificial intelligence, robotics, and hypersonic technologies. These advancements align with India’s vision for a future-ready military force capable of integrated multi-domain operations.

Defense Minister Rajnath Singh’s declaration of 2025 as the “Year of Reforms” reinforces this commitment, targeting nine key areas, including jointness among the Army, Navy, and Air Force, modernization of equipment, and restructuring processes. The establishment of Integrated Theatre Commands (ITCs) and interoperability with Central Armed Police Forces are significant steps to enhance operational efficiency. Streamlined procurement and delayering organizational hierarchies further exemplify the Indian Army’s resolve to accelerate its modernization drive.

In counterterrorism, the Indian Army has maintained a high operational tempo in Jammu and Kashmir, where 60% of neutralized terrorists in 2024 were of Pakistani origin. Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi highlighted progress in security, citing peaceful elections and increased tourism in the region. Alongside counterinsurgency measures, efforts to ensure border security along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China remain a priority. The situation in Ladakh, while sensitive, is described as stable, with ongoing disengagement efforts at friction points like Depsang and Demchok. These measures aim to restore access to traditional patrolling areas and prevent future escalations.

The Army also plays a vital role in stabilizing domestic conflicts, as seen in Manipur, where coordinated efforts between security forces and the government have brought violence under control. Although cyclic incidents persist, proactive initiatives continue to foster peace. On the global stage, defense diplomacy has become a cornerstone of the Army’s agenda, showcasing indigenous capabilities and strengthening India’s position in the international defense ecosystem.

Human resource development remains a critical focus, with policies emphasizing the inclusion of women, welfare for veterans, and the Agnipath recruitment scheme. This ensures a motivated workforce aligned with India’s military heritage and modern needs. These reforms contribute to the broader national vision of Viksit Bharat@2047, positioning the Army as a key pillar of India’s growth.

As the Army Day celebrations acknowledge past achievements, they also symbolize a forward-looking approach. The Indian Army’s comprehensive reforms and modernization efforts underline its commitment to adapting to evolving warfare dynamics and ensuring national security in an increasingly complex geopolitical environment.
