External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar met with Maldivian Foreign Minister Dr. Abdulla Khaleel in New Delhi on Friday, marking a significant step in bolstering India-Maldives relations. This meeting comes shortly after President Mohamed Muizzu’s visit to India in October, underlining a period of renewed diplomatic engagement between the two nations.

During the talks, both ministers expressed their commitment to enhancing bilateral cooperation across various sectors. Key discussions included maritime security, trade, and investment opportunities, aligning with the India-Maldives joint vision for a ‘Comprehensive Economic & Maritime Security Partnership’. Dr. Khaleel acknowledged India’s consistent support, particularly through financial assistance and emergency aid, which he described as crucial under India’s ‘Neighbourhood First Policy’.

The visit also saw the signing of agreements aimed at community development projects, reflecting a mutual interest in strengthening ties beyond just diplomatic relations. This engagement is seen as a move to deepen the strategic partnership amidst regional geopolitical dynamics, with both countries looking forward to celebrating 60 years of diplomatic relations this year.
