India Evacuates 75 Nationals from Conflict-Ridden Syria

In a swift response to the recent political upheaval in Syria, the Indian government has successfully evacuated 75 of its nationals from the war-torn country. The operation, coordinated by the Indian embassies in Damascus and Beirut, was executed following the collapse of President Bashar al-Assad’s regime, which led to a significant deterioration of security conditions.

Among the evacuees were 44 ‘zaireen’ (pilgrims) from Jammu and Kashmir, who had been stranded at Saida Zainab, a significant site for Shia Muslims. These individuals were safely moved across the border into Lebanon, where they are expected to return to India via commercial flights. The Ministry of External Affairs emphasized that this evacuation underscores India’s commitment to the safety and security of its citizens abroad.

The Indian government has been monitoring the Syrian situation closely and has advised the remaining Indian nationals in Syria to maintain contact with the embassy in Damascus for further assistance. This evacuation comes at a time when Syria is witnessing rapid changes with rebel forces gaining ground, signaling a new chapter in the country’s long-standing conflict.
