External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar attended the inauguration of Donald Trump as the 47th President of the United States on behalf of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Serving as India’s special envoy, Jaishankar carried a personal letter from PM Modi addressed to President Trump, reaffirming India’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations during Trump’s second term in office.
The inauguration ceremony, held indoors at the Capitol Rotunda due to extreme weather conditions, marked a historic moment as Donald Trump returned to the White House after four years. Chief Justice John Roberts administered the oath of office, with Trump expected to outline his second-term vision in his inaugural address.
India’s Diplomatic Presence
Jaishankar’s prominent seating in the front row at the Capitol Rotunda underscored the importance India places on its ties with the United States. Positioned alongside Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa, his presence highlighted India’s growing influence on the global stage. Notably, leaders from Japan and Australia, key members of the QUAD alliance with India and the U.S., were seated nearby, further symbolizing the partnership’s significance.
Strengthening Bilateral Ties
Jaishankar’s visit is part of India’s tradition of sending high-ranking officials to swearing-in ceremonies of world leaders. It reflects India’s commitment to fostering global partnerships. This visit follows earlier representations, such as Defense Minister Rajnath Singh attending Nigeria’s presidential inauguration and Earth Sciences Minister Kiren Rijiju participating in the Maldives’ swearing-in last year.
Prime Minister Modi’s letter, delivered by Jaishankar, is believed to emphasize collaborative efforts across trade, defense, and strategic cooperation. India’s participation in such high-profile events highlights its role as a key partner in addressing global challenges and advancing mutual interests.
A Historic Inauguration
President Trump’s inauguration drew a distinguished audience, including leaders from across the world and industry titans. Among the notable Indian attendees were Mukesh and Nita Ambani, Google CEO Sundar Pichai, and prominent business leaders like Kalpesh Mehta and Pankaj Bansal, who represent India’s economic dynamism on the global stage.
As Jaishankar represented India at this landmark event, his presence reinforced New Delhi’s determination to enhance its strategic partnership with Washington. The event served as a reminder of the enduring importance of U.S.-India relations and their potential for growth during Trump’s second term.
