From March 1 to 8, 2025, India hosted a significant Belgian Economic Mission led by Her Royal Highness Princess Astrid of Belgium, representing His Majesty the King. This high-profile visit aimed to enhance bilateral trade, investment, and strategic partnerships between the two nations, reflecting a shared vision for stronger economic and diplomatic relations. 

Delegation Composition and Objectives

The delegation comprised over 330 members, including leading business executives, government officials, and representatives from various industries. The mission focused on key areas such as trade, investment, technology, innovation, defense, agriculture, life sciences, space, skilling, academic exchanges, and cultural collaborations. Belgium and India, both strategically positioned in their respective regions, sought to leverage each other’s strengths for mutual economic growth and technological advancement. 

Key Engagements

The mission’s itinerary included visits to New Delhi and Mumbai, two major economic and financial hubs in India. 

New Delhi (March 1-4): The delegation began its visit in the capital, where they participated in high-level meetings with Indian officials and industry leaders.

On March 4, 2025, Princess Astrid met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who praised the initiative and highlighted the importance of strong economic ties between India and Belgium. He emphasized opportunities for collaboration in trade, technology, defense, agriculture, life sciences, and innovation. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar also engaged with the delegation, underlining the importance of India-Belgium and India-EU partnerships. 

Mumbai (March 5-8): Following their engagements in New Delhi, the delegation will proceed to Mumbai, India’s financial capital, to explore business opportunities and expand economic partnerships. Discussions will focus on pharmaceuticals, logistics, aerospace, renewable energy, and technological collaborations.

Key Areas of Cooperation

  1. Trade and Investment

Belgium is India’s second-largest trading partner within the European Union. The mission aimed to further boost trade relations by identifying new investment opportunities. Several agreements were discussed to facilitate smoother trade, business expansion, and joint ventures between Belgian and Indian enterprises.

Recognizing evolving geopolitical challenges, India and Belgium emphasized the need for stronger defense cooperation. The establishment of a working group was proposed to develop a structural framework for military collaboration. Belgium’s expertise in aerospace technologies was a key discussion point, with both nations exploring partnerships for defense manufacturing and supply chain integration.

The mission underscored the significance of deepening ties between India and Belgium, not only in economic domains but also in research, education, and cultural exchanges.
