Azerbaijan Joins D-8 Organization

In a landmark decision at the 11th D-8 Summit in Cairo on December 19, 2024, Azerbaijan was unanimously elected as the newest member of the Developing Eight (D-8) Organization for Economic Cooperation. This historic inclusion marks the first expansion of the organization since its inception in 1996, signifying Azerbaijan’s growing influence in the international arena.

The D-8, consisting of Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Turkey, now welcomes Azerbaijan, which is seen as a strategic move to bolster economic collaboration across member nations. With this membership, Azerbaijan aims to leverage its position to enhance trade relations, investment opportunities, and cultural exchanges, particularly with countries that share a significant portion of the global Muslim population.

Prime Minister Ali Asadov of Azerbaijan emphasized the country’s historical role as a bridge between East and West, stating that this membership will contribute to strengthening Islamic solidarity and countering Islamophobia. The decision has been met with enthusiasm from member states, with leaders like President Erdogan of Turkey noting that the D-8 is stronger with Azerbaijan’s inclusion. This step is anticipated to open new avenues for economic and social development among the member countries.
