In a significant diplomatic move, India’s National Security Advisor Ajit Doval is set to meet Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Beijing on 18h December 2024 for the Special Representatives (SR) dialogue on the border issues, the first such meeting in nearly five years. This dialogue comes after a period of tension along the Line of Actual Control, particularly following the 2020 Galwan Valley clash, which heightened military stand-offs between the two nations.
The meeting aims to address the ongoing border disputes and possibly pave the way for de-escalation and normalization of relations. Discussions are expected to cover the contentious areas in Eastern Ladakh, where despite several rounds of military talks, both sides have yet to fully disengage. The resumption of these SR talks was agreed upon during a recent encounter between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping, signaling a potential thaw in India-China relations.
Both countries have expressed intentions to work towards peace and stability along their shared borders, although skepticism remains about immediate breakthroughs given the complexity of the issues at hand.
